Sanibel - Captiva Islands

These islands are located on the gulf coast of Florida west of Fort Myers. There are many places to see on the islands including a light house. The homes are beautiful and hopefully built to withstand the force of strong hurricane winds and flooding waters. This area is vulnerable to strong storms and also a masterpiece of soft white sand, soothing gulf breezes and natural beauty. Sanibel Island measures roughly 12 miles long and 5 miles across at its widest. Little sister Captiva Island has more compact measurements of less than 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. The beaches are a catch-all for the billions of shells cast up on its shores. The Sanibel "Stoop" is a familiar phrase used to describe the position used by shellers while collecting their treasured finds. There are about 275 kinds of shells found in the island waters. A refuge approximately 4 miles in length offers sanctuary to many different species of animals and birds. The soft white sand beaches offer a great place to relax and enjoy time together.
