On Florida's west coast at the southern tip of the
Pinellas Peninsula, lies Mullet Key. This island is situated at the mouth of Tampa Bay. In 1877 the Army Board of Engineers recommended Mullet Key be retained as the site for fortifications to protect the shipping channel into Tampa Bay. The fort was active for many years and in 1963 was dedicated as a county park. In 1977 the park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. North Beach, located in Ft. De Soto park, was named America's #1 beach in 2005.
