Calgary Stampede Rodeo

Monday, July 9, 2007 spent the day at the Calgary Stampede. This is a 10 day event promoted as "The Greatest Show on Earth". There are many similarities with the State Fairs we have in the Midwest. One unique event was the Stock Dog event where a sheep dog has to maneuver three sheep through a course and finally into the pen. The course has a four minute time limit. The winning time for the $10,000 first place prize was 1 minute and 54 seconds. The crowd enjoyed this with much emotion shared as the sheep challenged the dog by stomping their front feet and staring each other down. The handler used various methods of communication to the dog from verbal commands to whistle commands. The Rodeo had many events from bare back riding, saddle bronc riding, bull dogging, calf roping, barrel racing and bull riding. An interesting event was where three youth from the ages of 8 - 11 were challenged to take a wild pony with a halter and a long rope from the chute and one youth had to mount the wild pony and ride it. This was a timed event. You can see from the photos that this was a challenge with the last team being drug around the arena in their valiant effort to win.
