Prince Edward Island - Day One

We crossed the Confederation Bridge to PEI and found the bridge to be an amazing engineering feat. The design of the bridge includes several curves in the 8.1 miles (about a 10 minute drive) to prevent drivers from becoming mesmerized. The placement of the 65 concrete piers, 250 metres apart, creates a visual spectacular. The centre portion of the bridge is raised 60 metres as a navigation span. There are about 50 lighthouses on PEI and we were able to see many of them. The potato harvest had been delayed due to wet weather the last few weeks. The equipment has been readied and parked in the red-soil fields waiting for drier conditions to harvest the crop that has played a key role in the island's economy for years. The bays are filled with lobster boats waiting to make the catch of the day. On this day a catch of 275 lbs of lobster came in to be sent to the lobster pound. Another lobster boat was restocked with herring for the lobster traps to return for another lobster catch. North Cape, located at the northwestern tip of PEI has a wind turbine farm that produces 7 percent of the electricity for the island.
